This review is a collection of the documentation for the permaculture project for fall 2020. Below is an introduction providing an overview of what the permaculture project is and the thoughts behind it. My presentation begins with a small selection of my experiments in how to present the project. I have used layering of images, layering of voices on an audio track, and grinding pigment as aides to present the project. The links provided will give a deeper dive into these different documentation styles.

The Permaculture Orchard – Fall 2020
A Living Sculpture
Conceptually, the idea for this orchard was birthed from the agricultural practice of permaculture. As a technique permaculture attempts to mimic mother nature; we combine the species that work harmoniously so that perhaps they can continue on their own without our interruption and pruning. The hope, my hope, is that the apples of this orchard will nourish my grandchildren, and that the inhabitants of this project will feed and grow themselves. It’s an experiment in the art of abundance, an artistic endeavor that channels mother nature herself.

“Seven Fires” is an image that contains smoke, stone, seven fires, and open sky of twilight. The fires all surround a center stake silhouetted in the blaze of the fires. The cool blue of the sky is in direct contrast to the orange glow of the fire. The fire is set to sweeten the soil of the “Orchard Project”. The land is depleted and low in pH. The ash incorporates a much need element and rebalances the underlying balance of the site, boosting plant’s ability to absorb nutrients. In lighting the seven fires the intent is to improve quality of soil but also to incorporate an element of ceremony and celebration. The project is promoting regenerative healing of not only soil but self in being a part of this process.
